IRTI Economist Receives Award for Contribution to Development of Islamic Finance

An Economist at the Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI), Dr. Hylmun Izhar, has been honored with the prestigious award of ‘Upcoming Personality in Global Islamic Finance (Academic)’ during the annual Global Islamic Finance Awards (GIFA) held in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The award was presented to Dr. Izhar by Kairat Kelimbetov, Governor of the International Finance Center, Astana, at a ceremony on 6 September 2017, in the presence of dignitaries that included Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The award was in recognition of Dr. Izhar’s research and academic contributions to the development of Islamic banking and finance, said GIFA Chairman Professor Humayon Dar.

“It is young scholars like Dr. Hylmun Izhar who are the torchbearers of movement of Islamic banking and finance, and Awards Committee recognized this potential to honor him. I congratulate him and his employer, IRTI, for receiving this prestigious accolade,” Professor Dar added.

In his comments on the award, IRTI Director General, Prof. Mohamed Azmi Omar, said IRTI was delighted that one of its scholars was recognized by GIFA. “IRTI will continue to support its team of seasoned scholars to contribute further towards the development of the Islamic financial services industry at the global level,” he added.

GIFA was founded in 2011 to celebrate success of institutions and individuals in the Islamic financial services industry, with the objective to promote commitment to Islamic finance, adherence to Shari’ah authenticity, and promotion of social responsibility.

Before joining IRTI, Dr. Izhar was a Research Fellow in Islamic Finance at Oxford Islamic Finance Ltd., a subsidiary company of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OXCIS), Oxford, United Kingdom, and was also a Lecturer in Islamic Economics and Finance at the Markfield Institute of Higher Education, Leicester, United Kingdom.

Dr. Izhar is a co-author of “I for Impact: Blending Islamic Finance and Impact Investing for the Global Goals”, a report published by UNDP and IDB Group. He is also one of the authors of the textbook Islamic Capital Markets: Principles and Practices,published by ISRA and Securities Commission Malaysia. His latest book titled Critical Issues in Islamic Economics and Finance Development was published by Palgrave MacMillan. His research has been published in various international refereed journals.

Dr. Izhar earned his PhD in Islamic Finance from Durham University during which he was honored with Distinguished Durham Doctoral Fellowship by the Graduate School, Durham University, United Kingdom.
