The Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI) has discussed with the government of Maldives on working together in the area of developing the country’s Islamic social finance and halal tourism sectors.

The discussion was held when a team from IRTI visited the Maldivian Minister of Islamic Affairs, H.E. Dr. Ahmed Zahir, in the country’s capital Male. The IRTI team comprised of Dr. Dawood Ashraf, Senior Researcher, and Mr. Mohamed Abdeltawab, Learning Specialist. Areas of possible collaboration discussed during the visit to the minister include the development of a platform for collection and disbursement of Zakah as an important mechanism to fight poverty; development of Awqaf law for the country; and promoting Islamic (halal) tourism sector in the country.
