The Islamic Research and Training Institute (IRTI) of the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Group has initiated a project to develop a pioneering e-book reader app dedicated to publications in Islamic Economics and development. The app, likely to be the first for a multilateral development institution, is being developed in partnership with technology firm Koraspond Digital Marketing Agency, a subsidiary of Ethmar Advertising company based in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The partnership will leverage innovative modern technologies and IRTI’s long-standing expertise in publishing in Islamic Economics to create a knowledge repository where readers around the world can have a rich experience in reading and browsing a large collection of publications.

With support for Arabic, English and French languages, the new app will be a comprehensive, user-friendly mobile application, to be available through the Apple Store and Google Play. It will be integrated to the IRTI website to allow users to purchase publications from the website and download them through the e-book reader app on their devices.

When completed, the app will accelerate knowledge creation and dissemination in Islamic Economics with the aim to support the development of the Islamic financial industry globally, as well as the sustainable development of IsDB Member Countries.

Commenting on the project, IRTI Acting Director General, Dr. Sami Al-Suwailem, said, “As online access to knowledge grows exponentially, there is a need to bring online access to knowledge in Islamic Economics up to par. Our initiative to develop the e-book reader app aims to address this need by creating an innovative, interactive platform with the most modern features and capabilities.”

Mr. Bilal Saeed, Koraspond’s Business Development Director, said, “Our biggest challenge while developing the IRTI e-reader app was to maintain a high level of technical prowess in light of e-reader apps like Kindle, Play Books, and iBook while maintaining the Islamic design DNA in overall UX/UI. We used the most advanced custom security APIs to have a comprehensive DRM (Digital Right Management) system to avoid unauthorized distribution of Intellectual property.”

The app will provide a pleasurable reading experience to both specialist and non-specialist readers. The main target users of the app will include policymakers, industry professionals, investors, academics, students and other stakeholders in the Islamic financial industry.
